Itchy feet? Ichigo World’s Sweet Retreat

During winter in Tohoku it is difficult to escape the strawberry! From supermarket shelves to cafes and convenience stores, everywhere you look you will find perfectly packaged cartons of huge, gem-like red and shiny fruit, and strawberry flavoured varieties of your favourite snacks sweets. If you need a distraction from the cold, snowy weather, this is also the best time of year to take advantage of all-you-can-eat strawberry-picking experiences at local farms!

One of the areas most famous for its tasty strawberries is Watari, just south of Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture. Lin (Taiwan) recently took her family on an outing to two great locations for making the most of the strawberry season.

Located just a 10 minute walk from JR Yamashita Station on the Joban Line (about 40 mins from Sendai Station) is ‘Ichigo World’ – literally a world of strawberries.

Depending on the weather, you might like to opt for a 5 minute taxi ride from Yamashita Station, instead of walking through the winter snow! You can find the taxi rank right in front of the station.

Ichigo World is easily spotted by its huge greenhouses painted with the ichigo logo.

It isn’t until you walk inside that you really get a sense for how massive this place really is!!

A visit to Ichigo World is not complete without signing up for a 30 minute all-you-can-eat strawberry picking experience! 30 mins may not sound like enough time, but once you’ve tasted the first juicy fruit and strawberry fever overcomes you, your stomach will be grateful for the time-limit! Just when you thought unlimited strawberries was a deal sweet enough, throw in a chocolate fountain (for an extra 200 yen) or sweetened condensed milk dipping sauce (free!), and that should sort you right out!

30 mins all-you-can-eat strawberry picking will usually set you back 2000 yen for adults or 1000 yen for kinds (between 4~9 years of age. 3 and under enter free). However, if you visit later in the season the price may drop slightly. Right now (March) you can enter for just 1800 yen! In May, the price drops to a generous 1300 yen.

Throughout the peak strawberry season, Ichigo World hosts a number of fun and creative events, including jam making! We were lucky enough to visit on one of these days and could take home our own decorative jar of strawberry jam goodness.

Of course, the on-site shop also has a huge range of strawberry goods for you to take home with you (if you aren’t already strawberry-ed out!).

Yamamoto Strawberry Farm is also located in the Watari area of Miyagi Prefecture and also offers a great 30 minute all-you-can-eat strawberry picking extravaganza for around the same price as Ichigo World.

However the highlight of this complex is definitely the ‘Berry Very Labo’ cafe – a cafe selling everything and everything strawberry!

Not only desserts, but strawberry themed curries, pastas and other dishes are available on this berry tasty menu!

Again, there are also a plethora of tasty strawberry products that you can take home with you.
