Aomori: Art & Architecture

Aomori, well known for its ridiculously heavy snow fall in winter and its delicious apples, is also a paradise for lovers of art and architecture.

Maëlle and Garance (France) set off on a whirlwind tour of north Tohoku to see what artistic treasures they could uncover (along with a whole lot of miso-curry-milk ramen)!

See below for more details about each destination they visited:

AOMORI CITY

Aomori Museum of Art

Famous for its giant ‘Aomori-ken’ statue (the Japanese word ‘ken’ incidentally means both ‘prefecture’ and ‘dog’), this modern art museum is located just outside of downtown Aomori City. Much of the permanent exhibition here are works from local Aomori artists, including Nara Yoshitomo.

The museum is easily accessed by bus, around 20mins from Aomori Station.

A unique soul-food from Aomori City blended tastes of Sapporo’s famous butter-corn ramen with local miso and curry flavours! Curly egg noodles are served in a milky soup very different to Aomori’s typical ‘niboshi’ (dried sardine) based soups. Definitely one for those cold, snowy winter days!
