Sendai by the Sea

Sendai City, the capital of the Tohoku region, is blessed with the best of both mountains and ocean. If you find yourself with a spare day in Sendai, here is a great plan from Erk (Thailand) to ensure you experience the best of ‘Sendai by the Sea’.

More details about each destination below!

First, here is a transport guide for your trip – each destination can be easily accessed by car, or by public transport. If using public transport, it is recommended to look into purchasing a ‘Sendai Area Pass’ which gives you access to all forms of public transport across these areas.

SHIOGAMA FISH MARKETS

Famous for having the most sushi restaurants per capita in the whole of Japan, Shiogama is definitely the spot to visit if you have a hankering for some fresh sashimi. The fish markets here boast around 140 stalls, all selling the day’s catch of fresh seafood, including the region’s famous Matsushima oysters. In one corner of the market, you can buy a set of rice and soup to couple with whatever takes your fancy from the surrounding stalls. It’s basically like a DIY seafood bowl – a whole lot of fun and super tasty! There is also an area with a public charcoal grill to cook-up your oysters, scallops and shell fish.

MATSUSHIMA BAY

As one of Japan’s ‘Top 3 scenic views’, you can’t miss out on a trip to the beautiful Matsushima Bay. Dotted with hundreds of pine covered islands, taking a cruise around the bay (or between Matsushima and Shiogama) is without a doubt the best way to get the most from your visit. Back on land, there are fascinated temples, red bridges, the gorgeous Kanrantei tea house and street of delicious local delicacies including freshly grilled seafood and ‘Kamaboko’ fish cake.

Getting to Matsushima

Matsushima can be easily access from Sendai by local train, on the JR Senseki Line (around 40 mins). To access the bay area of Matsushima, be sure to get off the train at Matsushima-Kaigan Station (not Matsushima Station on the Tohoku Line!). Use this website for train times etc: http://www.hyperdia.com/en/

Once at Matsushima Bay, it is recommended to take a sight-seeing cruise around the bay. You can also use the sightseeing cruise as a convenient way to travel between Matsushima and Shiogama. More details here: https://www.marubun-kisen.com/english/
